Linking to Named Anchors

Anchors allow the user to "jump" to specific places in a document via a hyperlink. This eliminates the tedium of scrolling through long documents. A named position is created - an anchor. The anchor is then referenced as a link, meaning that the "jump" is from an image, word, or phrase to the anchor. The anchor and the hyperlink do not have to be in the same document, meaning that you can link images, words, or phrases on one webpage to a specific point on another webpage.

Before beginning, make sure the Invisible Elements turned on by choosing it from the Visual Aids list on the View menu.

To insert an anchor:

  1. Position the insertion point before the word, phrase, or image that is to named as the anchor.
  2. Choose Invisibles from either the Object's Panel menu or from the Insert menu on the tool bar. The Insert Named Anchor dialog box appears.
  3. Type a name for the anchor in the Anchor Name text box. Keep it simple, short, and use small case letters, no spaces, and no characters.

To link to a named anchor:

There are 2 ways to link to a named anchor:

using Link text box in the Property Inspector

or using the Point to File icon in the Property Inspector.

Using the Link text box:

  1. Select the text or image you wish to link the anchor to.
  2. In the Link text box in the Property Inspector, type # followed by the exact anchor name. Remember anchor names are case-sensitive.
  3. Save the file and preview in browser.

Using the Point to File icon: eliminates possible naming errors

  1. Select the text or image you wish to link the anchor to.
  2. In the Property Inspector, click and drag the Point to File icon to the anchor and release it when you are directly over the anchor. The anchor name now appears with the # sign in the Property Inspector Link text box.
  3. Save the file and preview in browser.
