The Marshall County HSTA Club under the direction of Alice and
David Cook has been in full operation since October of 1997. The Marshall County
HSTA Club meets in Room 265 at John Marshall High School every Tuesday afternoon
between 3:30 and 5:00 from September through May. The Club is currently made
up of students from Moundsville Junior High School, Union Junior High School,
and John Marshall High School. We are constantly looking for new members.
Our meeting typically begins with a snack accompanied by some socializing
among the members
and the advisors. Meetings include "hands on" activities in which
the students gain experience with
such skills as observation, data collection, data analyzing, and drawing conclusions.
Other activities include working with computers in the computer lab to analyze
data collected from an experiment or surfing the Internet to find information
on a relative topic. Work is also done on the Science Project at the meetings.
We have toured various health related facilities in the area, including the
Reynold Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, West Virginia. We have also toured the
waste water treatment plants in Moundsville and Wheeling. We look forward to
visits of guests from the local health related organizations.
Each year the students of HSTA clubs throughout the state work on science
projects. These projects are presented to the other HSTA students at a state
HSTA Science Symposium. Many of the presentation are given using technology
such as Microsoft Power Point. One of the Marshall County Club's recent projects
was a Community Service Project
for the citizens of Marshall County.
